Chocolate is one of the easiest ingredient that you can use to adorn your baking, because chocolates melts and sets solid in almost any shape or form that you want. Chocolate cake decorations can be made up to four weeks before using and it can be stored in the refrigerator until such time you'll need it.
Using chocolates is a great way to liven up your cake. You can ice or frost your made up cake with chocolates. And by using a peeler you can make curl designs to top your cake. This may range from small to big curls depending on the size of the cake. Small chocolate curls are made by scraping the corners of the chocolate bar and the big curls are made by scraping the peeler along the broad flat surface of the chocolate bar. Melting dark and white chocolate creates a two-toned effect by piping or spreading alternately the two colors and merging them with a pliable knife. Then sprinkle with small chocolate curls and scrape across the bands of chocolate.
If it's a birthday cake you're making, designing numbers made of chocolates instead of candles can be fun. Hearts design is best to use for valentines cake decorating. Or you can make criss-cross designs, stars, butterflies, flowers and circles. The design of your cake will depend mainly on the theme of the party.

Help w/decorating cake ideas for 40th birthday (80's themed party)?
My sister's 40th birthday party is coming up and it's an 80's themed party. Her colors are black and pink. She has asked me to do the cake, I'm not a professional by any means, but I've dabbled in it a little bit. I have a few questions...
1.) What should I write on the cake? It's an 80's themed party and she wants a snazzy saying, like instead of putting Happy 40th Birthday.
2.) Her colors are pink and black. I need some decorating ideas (pictures would be great). I am using fondant and I know with fondant you have to use a buttercream "crumb" coat underneath, is it OK if I use chocolate buttercream, or will the chocolate show through the fondant b/c the fondant is going to be white.
All ideas are appreciated and thanks so much for your help!
