Why Hardwood Floor Installation is a Thing of Beauty
I admit I am probably more interested in watching hardwood floor installation than you would be, because I make my living as a flooring contractor. I highly recommend observing some of the fascinating process as your new wood floor transforms from planks to perfection. I believe that anyone who works with wood is a craftsman. You can see the satisfaction on their faces. When it's a two man job, you'll notice they don't talk much. The precision of their work says it all. You can become entranced by the time the project is finished.
I really don't think I am overstating this. Good installers have developed skills that a homeowner attempting to do the flooring himself would never match. Good contractors have hardwood floor installation down pat.
Before installation day, you will have consulted with your contractor on just the type of wood you want, and the finish you prefer. A hardwood floor can be a complement to an existing décor, or it can form the foundation for entirely new interior decorating. White oak, maple, walnut, cherry, hickory and several other woods are available as an alternative to the standard red oak.
You will have decided if the planks will appear vertical or horizontal as you enter the room. Perhaps you have decided on "coast to coast", which means your hardwood floor installation is seamless from one room to the next. The contractor will have determined how much preparation your sub floor may need. With this information, and strict measurements, you will have had your estimate. Real wood is surprisingly affordable, when you consider its durability.
A good company offers to remove your furniture for you, to the room you choose or to storage. A lot of folks are using those temporary rental "boxes" you can have delivered right to your house. Crews should cheerfully move it back, taking the proper care to avoid any mars to your new floor.
Hardwood floor installation can be done in any weather. Some customers choose to "acclimatize" their wood; they have it delivered early to "live" in the house, so that any natural expansion or contraction has occurred before the wood is laid. As the craftsmen begin work, they can custom-cut the width of your planks. Much of today's standard width wood has had the tongues and grooves already cut in the factory, for as perfect a fit as is possible today. Of course, skilled wood workers can adjust and re-cut as needed. This is when that plank-by-plank; foot-by-foot process unfolds. After all these years, I still love to watch it and do it. You are getting a custom-made floor, designed and cut for your room. It's one-of-a-kind, not one-size-fits-all.
There is no need to fear dust; in fact nowadays there is no need for a lot of dust at all because there are leading edge dust containment systems. This is often the number one reason homeowners are uncertain about wood flooring. They love the look, but they've heard horror stories about the dust. Dust problems are totally unnecessary! As your flooring is cut, and especially when it is sanded, dust is inevitable. But in my experience, 98% of the dust can be collected and removed as sanding progresses. You will be surprised at how clean and efficient these powerful machines are. The remnants of cutting and sanding are drawn to the outside of your house. Dust simply won't spread around to other rooms and furniture.
When the floor is smooth and ready to take color, staining begins. One of the benefits of hardwood is that it will take oil or water based finishes. You can adjust the color of the finish, by asking for a few "test" pieces to help you make a final decision on color. Not only is color adjustable, but also texture and shine. You can have a hue that picks up a color in furniture or draperies. You can strike out in a totally new color direction.
One of the surprises you may experience following hardwood floor installation is how easy to maintain wood is. They appreciate that wood is hypo-allergenic. Unlike carpet, wood will not hold on to dust, dander or pet hair. It is easily swept or vacuumed away.
Hardwood floor installation is, indeed, a thing of beauty. Of course, the finished product is, too.

What color Hardwood for my bedroom please help?
Hi I have a small bedroom say 12 by 10 or so. With a queen size bed that is brown colored wood. Two large brown Wooden chinese Trunks... and a tan colored wall. I was wondering what color hardwood to put on the floor. Right now its a light carpet. I have two pieces from home depot a light maple ... which looks very light. and a spiced Walnut which is almost the exact color of my Chinese trunks. Do you think it will be too brown with the dark floor? Please help!
I would put in a light tanish wooden floor. It might look better than a dark floor.
