What's the best compact digital camera for low light photography without flash?
I'm looking for a compact digital camera, it will be used indoors for doing surveys in factories. Often it won't be possible to use a flash due to the presence of highly reflective stainless steel structures and plant. So I'm looking for the best performance camera in low light without a flash, plus it has to slip easily into a coat pocket. Any other features are not so important, except battery life. Any specific recommendations based on personal experience would be great. Otherwise is there a particular digital camera specification that tells me about its low light performance, so I can directly compare models? Thanks
Low-light, non-flash photography requires a fast lens (f1.4, f1.8) and a larger sensor to handle higher ISO settings. Unfortunately, compact digital cameras simply do not meet these criteria.
I believe its possible that you are mistaking the available light based on your eyes. The human eye is much more sensitive than a camera lens. Try this experiment:
Install a 4 watt nightlight in a bathroom with no windows. Shut the door and turn off any lights except the nightlight. Now wait a few minutes and note how your eyes adjust to the low light. Standing a couple of feet away from the light source you should be able to read labels on mouthwash bottles, etc. Now try to take a meter reading with your camera. Start at ISO 200 and keep increasing the ISO until you get a usable reading - one with your lens at its maximum f-stop, whether f2.0 or 2.8 or whatever it happens to be.
Referring to my trusty FotoSharp (http://www.fotosharp.com) Day & Night Scene Calculator, I'll use "Home Interiors, Average Light* " as an example.

f2 @ 1/30 sec.
f2.8 @ 1/15 sec.
ISO 800
f1.4 @ 1/125 sec.
f2 @ 1/60 sec.
f2.8 @ 1/30 sec.
ISO 1600
f1.4 @ 1/250 sec
f2 @ 1/125 sec.
f2.8 @ 1/60 sec.
To the best of my knowledge there isn't a compact digital camera made that has an f1.4 lens - unless you're looking at the Leica M8 fitted with a 35mm f1.4 Summilux-M lens and then you're looking at approximately $9,000.00 for camera and lens.
A good DSLR and comparable lens will be much cheaper.
* Determining what constitutes "average light" is debatable. I'll guess it might be 2 table lamps, each with a 100 watt bulb.
